The High Country Festival of the Book

Last Saturday, readers from all over the High Country converged on western North Carolina to check out the presentations and all the amazing books on offer at the High Country Festival of the Book.

It took place at Watauga High School, a building that's so new, it recalled none of my formative years, although my husband felt as if he were headed off to class.

Here I am with Jan Holmes Frost, published author, seminar-giver, relation to Robert Frost, and the Loose Leaves editor who suggested we go to the event. Everyone seemed impressed with her because she came from Spartanburg, SC, while my recent arrival in NC itself received a tepid response.

Tree/House Book Club

The Secret Society of Literary Divas of St. Helens, OR loves Tree/House!

Clockwise from left, the Literary Divas who were able to attend the momentous March meeting were Linda, Beth, Patty, Debi, Kay, Kailyn, Nora, Gail, and Mickey.  Oops, I hope I didn't wreck the secret! Many of the ladies read the book on their e-reader devices, and in this picture, we can see sly, brilliant Patty holding up a library edition. Anyone can and should request Tree/House for their local library. It's a great way to support literature at no cost to yourself.



Linda was nice enough to send me this picture and some of the topics the ladies discussed. Third Six Sentence Sunday

Thanks so much to everyone who's visited my other Six Sentence Sunday posts, and especially you spunky commentators! It's been incredibly inspiring. Readers, find the other participants here.

In honor of the imminent meeting of the St. Helens Secret Society of Literary Divas (Book Club), this excerpt comes from my Tree/House, page 95 of the print edition.  Here, Emma, the protagonist, is dreaming she's on top of a rocky cliff on which hundreds of putrefying bodies are waiting to die. She herself has rotted to the point of missing her right arm and both legs. It's a positive image, really!

He replied before she asked, "To die, you must lie perfectly still, but it's hard. I've been trying for years."

"But Emma, why do you want to die?" asked a young woman in the earliest stages of putrefaction. "You have so much going for you."

Emma wondered what she had that they didn't. Most of them still had all their limbs at least.
